ANNIKA AXELSSON ENDS 2019 BY ACCOMPLISHING HER DREAMS

2019 is already ending but certainly is not a year to forget for the Swedish show jumper Annika Axelsson (36). The only one of her family to get involved in the equestrian sport, she has worked hard to compete in 5 * competitions like the one held this weekend in A Coruña: “My family always supported me in the best way possible, since they they don't ride and they couldn't support me financially to buy horses. ” Her hobby began at age 6, where she rode in one of the best schools in his country, although it was not until 14 that she actually owned her first horse. Since 2012 she runs her own stables in Belgium (https://www.aastables.eu), and has won the trust of important owners, including Princess Sheika Shamma bint Sultan Al Nahyan from Abu Dhabi, of the Al Asayl stables (http://alasj.com) (http://alasj.com/horse/w-diva-rosa-mfs) who owns the horse that Annika will ride this afternoon at the GP Longines Fei World Cup, W Diva Rosa MFS.

"Belgium is not a country that is too big, but the horse industry is very strong and they are leaders in the sport. It is very developed in breeding and in all aspects of the equestrian world," she says. Before settling in Belgium, where she has been living for 5 years, Annika, who is part of the Swedish jumping team, spent six months working in Dubai.

Tell us about your stables?

I have horses as young as 4 years old up to Grand Prix horses. This is the first year that I participate in 5 * competitions. It's amazing, completely different from what I was doing before. I feel very grateful to have such good owners and other people who help me to be at this level, so I hope to be able to do many competitions like this one in A Coruña.

Tell us about your equestrian career?

I started at 6 years old and I had my first horse at 14, but I suffered ups and downs. When I was 19, I got lymphatic cancer and had to stop for two years, since it is something that truly breaks you and demands a lot from you. I barely had energy, so in the following two years I didn't ride, practically. It has not been easy but, precisely because of that, I value being at this level so much. Last year I made my first 4 *, and my first 5 * in Sopot (Poland). She had always competed up to 1.50 meters, although never had the horses to go further.

It did not faze you to move around to find your ideal location?

I lived in Dubai for 6 months, working for an Egyptian, training his horses and also grooming. The following year I was coming and going to help a girl I was training. Then I took 3 of my horses to competitions there and now I always go back 2 or 3 times a year. I love Dubai.

The reason I moved to Belgium was that I got a job with a dealer, although it only lasted a year because, honestly, it wasn't my thing. It was fine anyway, because it helped me make some contacts. What he did was sell, ride and show his horses. Now I work for some great owners to whom I am very grateful, some also in Dubai, among which I can highlight the owner of my best horse, W Diva Rosa MFS.

I love Belgium. It is also accessible to be able to train young people and, at the same time, be at the highest level, since there are many facilities and competitions, and many clients, it is comfortable to move to other events from there, because everything is close. As a base, it's great.

Tell us about a highlight in your career?

When I made my first 4 * in Poznan and I was fifth it was incredible, and later I was invited to Sopot, where I finished without penalties in the Grand Prix 5 * and finished 11th. After that, I went to Falsterbo, which was obviously special being my country, and I had a clear round in the Grand Prix, something that was fabulous because it was in my home country, but also because I had never competed at that level. Completing three great competitions one after another and with clear rounds every time, it was fantastic. The best moment was probably in Falsterbo, because in Poland it was just me and my groom, but in Sweden my coach, my parents and my friends were all there supporting me. You enjoy it more and you keep those moments forever when all your friends and family are there to share those moments with you.

Is it a hard life being a professional showjumper?

A little, yes. For example, you have to travel often, there are many things to do at home ... But I'm lucky because I have a great team. My groom is amazing, I trust her 100%. You also have to think about your team at home, with 16 horses to take care of, but I have a girl who takes care of everything. In my case, my boyfriend is also a show jumper, although for now he has no horses at this level and participates mostly in 2 and 3 star events.

I think everything is more bearable when your partner is in the same field as you, because someone with a normal job does not understand that you are away every weekend. We can even go to competitions together: sometimes I accompany him, sometimes he accompanies me, that makes things easier. For example, when I lived in Sweden I had a boyfriend who was a golfer, I think that is too different, it is easier if you are in the same industry.

It can sometimes be very lonely, you travel and work long hours and it may be regret to be away from your loved ones. Also, I live in Belgium, my parents in Sweden and my sister in Ireland, so you're always far from your family. Luckily it's just a matter of taking a plane, and at least they are in Europe, it was worse when I lived in Dubai. Now my parents visit me and, for example, they came to Madrid, which was great.

Who are your best horses right now?

Diva Rosa, who has qualified me in these great prizes in summer. I acquired in April of last year and has been making some great 2 * prizes. When I started with her it was not easy, she was very strong and full of blood, it was complicated and it took me almost a year to meet her and adapt her to me, but after that we connected. He is 11 years old, very flexible and can jump any height.

The other one I have is Cooper, since May. He is an impressive horse, has qualified for some 1.50 shows and is only 9 years old.

Have you ever done any breeding?

A little, but more as a hobby than professionally. Maybe later, when I have a few mares retired, I will consider it. It's also better if you have your own stable, I'm renting right now, so maybe when I have one of my own.

Do you plan to continue riding and competing all your life?

No I don’t think so. Since I now have really good horses, in two years I would like to be part of the Europeans and go to the Olympic Games. I think it's still very soon next year, so I want to try to make more nations cups. It is clear that I will continue, but I do not think that when I am 60 I will still be competing. Surely another 10 or 15 years, while still enjoying it. She says she hopes to have children and hopefully they want to ride.

Which is your favourite competition?

I really like this one in A Coruña, it's really good, the stables, the warm up arena,

the competition, everything. And the food is amazing! Especially compared to other competitions where they just give you sandwiches for three days (laughs).

I also love Falsterbo, and this summer I have competed in Dublin, which had a great atmosphere. The grass arena is extraordinary and, in addition, my sister came, who lives in Ireland and does not ride, but she helps me with my social networks and my website.

What is your plan for the next few weeks?

My horses are going to rest a little after this, and then I will resume with tests of 2 and 3 stars in Belgium and Holland. I also have two events in Qatar at Al Shaqab in the end of February, then one in Sweden, the Gothenburg World Cup.
