Which stallions as sire of the dam have had the most amount offspring at international level this past year? Which stallions are very successful as sire of the dam in comparison to as a direct sire?

When breeding, a lot of deep thought goes into carefully selecting a sire that would complement a specific mare. The choice of a stallion can be based on a variety of sources, for example Hippomundo’s sire ranking. But what can oftentimes be overlooked is the pedigree of the mare, because as it seems, some sire’s quality shows itself more on the mother’s side of the pedigree. Therefore Hippomundo offers a “sire of dam” ranking, which ranks grandfathers on the mother’s side based on the number of offspring that have a specific stallion as father of the mother, their combined total amount of prizemoney won and the average amount of prize money won per offspring in international competitions during the past 365 days.

Number of horses

The stallion that had the largest amount of maternal grandchildren jumping at international level during the past 365 days is Quidam de Revel. 399 horses have the Selle Français stallion by Jalisco B x Nankin as father of the mother. Whereas, as a direct sire, Quidam only had 156 offspring jumping internationally this past year, which placed him 24th on the sires ranking. Indoctro follows up as 362 horses who have the Holsteiner stallion by Capitol I x Caletto II as sire of the dam have competed internationally these past 365 days. As a father, Indoctro had 199 offspring at the international level, good for a 15th place on the sires ranking. With 334 grandchildren at international level, it is Heartbreaker, the KWPN stallion by Nimmerdor x Silvano, who complete the top three, but in the sires ranking only places 64th with 77 offspring in international competitions this year.

Combined total of prize money

The highest total amount of prize money has been won by offspring who have Nabab de Reve as father of the mother. His direct offspring however, have won less than half of that amount, €856,293. Whereas direct offspring of the Selle Français stallion by Galoubet A x Starter has only won €341,274. The top three is completed by For Pleasure, who as a father of the mother, has offspring that has won a total amount of €1,611,583 in international classes this past year. Direct offspring Hanoverian stallion by Furioso II x Grannus has won only €524,389, which places them 33rd on the sires ranking.

Average amount of prize money

When we take a look at the average amount of prize money won per offspring of these six stallions, both as sire and as sire of the dam, we come across some interesting finds. The biggest surprise comes from Quidam de Revel. As a father of the mother he had three times as many offspring competing internationally this past year than as a direct sire. However when we look at the average amount of prize money won, it is his direct offspring who has gained a lot more than the grand-offspring, almost triple the amount. For Pleasure seems to have been really successful at the international level this past year, both as a sire and as sire of the dam.

Obviously the stallions that appear in the “sire of the dam” ranking are older so they can appear in multiple generations of pedigrees. This could be one of the reasons why they have higher amounts of offspring in the second generation compared to in the first generation. However, it is still interesting to see how their offspring differs when the stallions appear in first or second generation of the pedigree. The entire “sire of dam” ranking can be found here.
