Hazel Shannon and Willunga Park Clifford win for the second time First time all-female top ten in a CCI4* event across the world After an exciting final day of jumping at the Mitsubishi Motors Australian International 3 Day Event, New South Wales based rider, Hazel Shannon on her horse Willingapark Clifford have been crowned the 2018 winner. Hazel and Clifford have also made Aus3DE history by winning the CCI4* class for the second time as a combination since its inception in 1999. They first won the event in 2016. The competition came down to the final two top places going into the jumping, with Amanda Pottinger from New Zealand holding first place after cross country battling it out with Hazel Shannon in second place. Hazel & Clifford jumped first and had two rails to finish on a score of 59.5 penalties. The pressure was then on Amanda riding her 12-year-old thoroughbred gelding ‘Just Kidding’, who unfortunately took down four rails adding 16 penalties to her score, taking her to a final of 63.2 penalties and dropping down to second place. This is the second year that we’ve seen a New Zealand competitor in the top two with Clarke Johnstone taking out the title in 2017. Willungapark Clifford also took home the Off The Track Thoroughbred award and is owned by ACT entrepreneur Terry Snow. Terry purchased the horse allowing Hazel to retain the ride after winning in 2016. Third place went to Western Australian rider Sonja Johnson riding Misty Isle Valentino finishing on 78.8 penalties. This is the first time that there has been an all-female top ten in...
Olympic Silver Medallist Shane Rose takes a second victory in the CCI3*
Olympic Silver Medallist and winner of the 2018 CCI2* riding his horse Ultimate Velocity wins the CCCI3* also, finishing on 46.10. Shane has always been successful in Adelaide, winning the CCI4* in 2004 and 2015. He isn’t competing in the CCI4* this year, instead focusing on developing his 2 younger horses who are coming through the ranks, and he’s looking forward to Tokyo. He has identified this weekend’s MM Australian International Three-Day event as a crucial step in the preparation for the 2020 Tokyo games. Rose has just recovered from a shoulder injury, but to Rose it was a minor complaint to add to a long list of injuries. Callum Buczak from Victoria riding Matavia Cheval finished in 2nd place with 49.90 penalties. He had 2 fences down, but came in under time and he would be very pleased to take 2nd place behind an experienced Olympian. Victorian professional rider Andrew Cooper – had 4 penalties, riding Oaks Onyx, to take 3rd place finishing on 57.60. For full results and more information visit www.australian3de.com.au. 4* Leader board changes ahead of the final day
After several queries from riders, the ground jury have reviewed the official on-course cameras and made some alterations to the scores, which have affected the leader board of the CCI4*. Amanda Pottinger from NZL, riding Just Kidding has moved in to first place on 47.20 penalty points and Hazel Shannon (NSW) riding Willinga Park Clifford on 51.50 penalty points. Emily Gray has moved to third position, on 67.30 penalty points. With a rail in hand, will Amanda Pottinger be the first Adelaide first timer to win the CCI4* in 17 years??? Matthew Grayling in 2001 was the last person to win a first timer here. Hazel Shannon and Willinga Park Clifford, have a chance to be the first ever horse to win the CCI4* twice. They jumped clear here last year and the year before. They are 4.3 pens behind and a clear round would keep pressure on the leader. This sets an exciting scene for the final day of the 2018 Mitsubishi Motors Australian International 3 Day Event. What a difference a day makes (4* Cross Country results)
The 2018 Mitsubishi Motors Australian International 3 Day Event provided a great competition for spectators today as the CCI4* field saw the placings move spectacularly around. Mike Etherington-Smith’s CCI four-star cross-country course asked many questions for the field of 24 horses and riders that started the cross-country phase of the event today, with many not having the answers and seeing them exiting the competition with elimination. In an extremely rare occurrence, after finishing in bottom place yesterday, Emily Gray on her 14-year old bay gelding ‘Jocular Vision’ moved up 24 spots to top of the Leader board as the CCI4* Qantas Cross Country phase ends, sitting on 67.30 penalty points. Leading the competition after the cross country, Emily says “I knew this wasn’t going to be a dressage competition for us, we were definitely looking ahead to the Cross Country. I had my plan in my head. It was a tough track, I didn’t know what had happened out there, and I wanted to stick to my own plan.” “Heading in to tomorrow’s last day – I have a positive mindset and I’ve just got to stay confident”, said Emily. Event Director Belinda Lindh says “it was a testing four-star course and it challenged the competitors skills today, in particular the new riders to the four-star level”. Sonja Johnson from WA is sitting in second place, exactly where she was sitting this time last year with her horse Misty Isle Valentino, on 67.80 penalties. Sonja says, “Mike has done a great job designing the course this year, it keeps developing each year, and I hope it keeps evolving in...
